# Free AI for Teachers in 2026: Lesson Planning, Grading and Slides

> Free AI for teachers: ChatGPT and Claude for Teachers (U.S. K-12), Google, Microsoft, Canva and Adobe school plans, and what to keep out of free chatbots.

- Time: 20 minutes
- You need: For the teacher plans: a job at a U.S. K-12 school or district and your school email (ChatGPT and Claude for Teachers), or a K-12 school in any country (Canva Education); For the school-wide plans: your school or district admin signs up (Google Workspace for Education, Microsoft 365 A1); For the everyday free tiers: any personal account, no card
- Last checked: 2026-10-26

Teachers get more free AI than almost anyone: OpenAI and Anthropic each give U.S. K-12 educators a paid-level chatbot for free, Google and Microsoft include AI in their free school plans, and Canva and Adobe give K-12 teachers their premium design tools with AI. Outside those programs, the everyday free tiers of ChatGPT, Mistral and Bing Image Creator cover lesson planning and slides, with lower limits and one important catch for grading: what you paste in may be used for training.

The teacher programs below are not in our catalog yet, so their rows link to the vendor's page; the everyday free tiers link to our verified offer pages. Every program was checked on the vendor's own page on 2026-10-24 or 2026-10-26.

## Free plans built for teachers and schools

| Plan | Who can get it | What is free | Until | Training on your chats |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [ChatGPT for Teachers](https://openai.com/index/chatgpt-for-teachers/) | Teachers and staff at U.S. K-12 schools and districts, verified through SheerID | Unlimited messages, search, file uploads, connectors (Google Drive, Microsoft 365, Canva), image generation; shared projects and GPTs with colleagues | June 2028; OpenAI says it will give notice of any price change | Not used to train by default |
| [Claude for Teachers](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/15926041-claude-for-teachers-your-data-and-our-terms) | U.S. K-12 classroom teachers, coaches, specialists, librarians, counselors and other certificated staff | Claude Pro features (including Claude Code and Cowork), teaching skills for lesson planning and differentiation, a standards connector (Learning Commons); higher limits than a Free account, with rolling five-hour and weekly caps | A full year for sign-ups by June 30, 2027 | Not used to train |
| [Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals](https://edu.google.com/workspace-for-education/editions/education-fundamentals/) | Accredited K-12 schools and degree-granting universities worldwide; the school applies, not the teacher | Classroom, Docs, Slides, Drive and Meet, plus Gemini for Education, Gemini Notebook and Gemini in Classroom | No end date; advanced AI needs Education Plus or add-ons | Enterprise-grade data protection, per Google |
| [Microsoft 365 A1](https://aifree.dev/offer/microsoft-365-education) | Educators and students with an eligible school email | Web Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and Teams | No end date; web apps only | - |
| [Canva Education](https://www.canva.com/education/) | Certified K-12 teachers currently teaching and school staff, any country; not higher education or private tutors | Canva's premium templates and content plus its classroom AI; students join through your invite | No end date; re-verify every 3 years | Canva says it never uses student data to train AI |
| [Adobe Express for K-12 Education](https://www.adobe.com/express/pricing?tab=4) | Qualified K-12 educators; in the U.S. you can sign up yourself with a Google Workspace for Education account, elsewhere your district deploys it | Most Adobe Express Premium features (regularly $9.99) and 250 generative credits a month | No end date | District admins can turn generative AI off |

Higher-education teachers are left out of most of this: ChatGPT for Teachers, Claude for Teachers, Canva Education and Adobe Express for K-12 are K-12 only. Google Workspace for Education and Microsoft 365 A1 cover universities too.

## Everyday free tiers (no school needed)

| Offer | Good for | Limits | Training on your chats |

| [ChatGPT Free](https://aifree.dev/offer/chatgpt-free) | Lesson plans, quizzes, worksheets, rewriting a text for a lower reading level | Limited file uploads, image generation, voice and deep research | On by default; turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in Settings > Data controls |
| [Mistral free plan](https://aifree.dev/offer/mistral-ai-free-plan) | The same jobs with a second model to compare against | Limited messages and web searches | On by default; can be turned off in Settings |

## Lesson planning

1. Give the model the frame: grade, subject, the standard or learning goal, lesson length and what your students already know. "Plan a 45-minute lesson for grade 7 on ratios; most students can do fractions but not percentages" works much better than "a lesson on ratios".
2. Ask for one piece at a time: the plan, then a warm-up, then an exit ticket, then the same worksheet at two reading levels.
3. Check every fact, date and quote before it reaches students. Chatbots invent plausible sources and numbers: see [why it invents sources](https://aifree.dev/explain/hallucination).
4. Claude for Teachers and ChatGPT for Teachers can read your curriculum files and, with connectors, your Drive; on a free tier, paste only the parts you need.

## Grading and feedback

- **Keep student names and personal details out of free consumer chatbots.** ChatGPT Free and Mistral's free plan train on chats by default. The teacher plans (ChatGPT for Teachers, Claude for Teachers) and your school's Google or Microsoft account are the places for student work, and only if your school allows it.
- **Let it draft feedback, not decide the grade.** Give it your rubric and one anonymous piece of work, ask for comments against each criterion, and edit them. You give the grade.
- **It tends to agree with you.** If you ask "this essay is weak, isn't it?", expect it to find weaknesses. Ask neutral questions: [why it agrees with everything](https://aifree.dev/explain/sycophancy).
- **Don't grade on an AI detector score.** Detectors measure how predictable the writing is, which flags some human writing and misses edited AI text: [can an AI detector tell?](https://aifree.dev/explain/ai-detectors)

## Slides

- **Canva Education** and **Adobe Express for K-12** turn an outline into a designed deck with their AI tools, and both are free for K-12 teachers. Adobe's 250 generative credits a month are shared by images and other AI features.
- **Google Slides and PowerPoint for the web** come with Google Workspace for Education and Microsoft 365 A1; ask a chatbot for the outline and speaker notes, then paste them in.
- **Pictures:** Bing Image Creator's 15 fast creations a day are enough for a deck; ChatGPT Free's image generation is limited too.

## Steps

**ChatGPT for Teachers (U.S. K-12)**

1. Open the [ChatGPT for Teachers](https://openai.com/index/chatgpt-for-teachers/) page and choose **Get verified**.
2. Verify through SheerID as a K-12 educator, then set up your workspace and invite colleagues.

**Claude for Teachers (U.S. K-12)**

1. Sign in to Claude and start the Claude for Teachers verification with your school email.
2. Accept the K-12 terms. Sign up by June 30, 2027 to get the full free year.

**Canva Education (K-12, any country)**

1. Open [Canva Education](https://www.canva.com/education/) and choose **Get verified**.
2. Sign up with your school email or upload proof of employment; Canva checks it within a few days. Then invite your class.

**Microsoft 365 A1 and Google Workspace for Education**

1. Microsoft: enter your school email on the [Microsoft 365 Education](https://aifree.dev/offer/microsoft-365-education) page; if your school is eligible, A1 starts at no cost.
2. Google: ask your school or district admin; only the institution can sign up for Education Fundamentals.

## Limits and the catch

- **Most teacher plans are U.S. only.** ChatGPT for Teachers and Claude for Teachers require a U.S. K-12 school; Canva Education is the one teacher plan open in every country.
- **Free periods end.** ChatGPT for Teachers is free through June 2028, Claude for Teachers for a year from sign-up. Note the date before your materials depend on it.
- **Student data rules come from your school.** Even on a teacher plan, whether you may share identifiable student information is your school's or district's decision.
- **Free tiers change.** We re-check offers monthly; [student AI deals](https://aifree.dev/student-ai-deals) lists the free AI deals for students.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is there a free ChatGPT for teachers?

Yes, for U.S. K-12 educators: ChatGPT for Teachers is free through June 2028 after SheerID verification, with unlimited messages, file uploads, connectors and image generation, and your chats are not used for training by default. Other teachers can use ChatGPT Free.

### Is Claude free for teachers?

Claude for Teachers gives verified U.S. K-12 educators a full year of Claude Pro features free if they sign up by June 30, 2027. Anthropic does not train on what you share there. It is for educators, not students.

### Which free AI can teachers outside the U.S. use?

Canva Education is free for K-12 teachers in every country, and Google Workspace for Education and Microsoft 365 A1 are free for eligible schools worldwide. Everyone can use the free tiers of ChatGPT, Mistral and Bing Image Creator.

### Can I use free AI to grade student work?

Use it to draft feedback against your rubric, not to decide grades. Keep names and personal details out of free consumer chatbots, which train on chats by default, and do not rely on AI detector scores.
