Why can I run Llama on my laptop but not GPT?

Open weights vs closed API models, and model licenses · Beginner · 5 min · llm, training · after Model size, free vs paid tiers, Quantization (bits per weight), Knowledge distillation (teacher and student models)

A model is a file of numbers called weights. Open-weights vendors like Meta publish that file, so it runs on your laptop or any host. Closed vendors keep it on their servers and sell answers through an API.

Before you start: could you explain this to a friend?

  1. 1 Guess first

Why can you download Llama, but not the GPT model inside ChatGPT?
  2. 2 Look

the file stays on the vendor’s servers

    the answer

    you see

    • your text
    • the answer
    • the price per token

    you never see

    • the file
    • how many numbers it holds
    • where it runs

A closed model is a locked box. Text goes in, text comes out; the model itself never leaves the vendor.

Too big for your memory? quantization · why small models are good: distillation · run one locally · where to use gpt-oss-20b free

A closed model is a box you can only talk to; an open-weights model is a file you can copy, so it runs on your laptop or any host, under the terms of its license.

  3. The weights are the numbers training produced: billions of them, nothing else. Open weights means the vendor publishes that file. Open source, by the Open Source Initiative’s definition, also needs the training code and enough detail about the training data to rebuild it. Llama ships the file only, under Meta’s own license.

  4. 4 You are the model

Four jobs, four constraints. For each, pick where the model should run.

  5. 5 Check

Why can Groq serve gpt-oss-20b for free but not the GPT inside ChatGPT?
  6. Why keep the file? OpenAI’s GPT-4 report cites “the competitive landscape and the safety implications” for not even sharing the model’s size. Selling answers by API is the business. Free tiers win either way: hosts like Groq and Cloudflare can serve open models for free because anyone may run the file.

  7. 7 Say it back

  8. 8 Mission · 5 min

On Groq’s free tier, ask openai/gpt-oss-20b: “In one sentence, what is a model’s weights file?” Then open huggingface.co/openai/gpt-oss-20b and find two things the API never showed you: the license and the parameter count. That same file runs on a 16 GB laptop with “ollama run gpt-oss:20b”.

Frequently asked questions

What is aifree.dev?

aifree.dev helps everyone access AI through a curated directory of free AI tools, API credits, free tiers, and startup programs for coding, image, voice, video, and students - verified regularly.

How are offers presented?

Each offer includes its access details, free models when available, and expiration information when provided. Limited-time deals stay visible so they are easy to compare.

Do education and startup programs need verification?

Yes. Providers usually ask students to verify their status with a school email, student ID, or a program like the GitHub Student Pack, and ask startups to verify company details such as age, funding, or website. Check each offer’s claim page for the exact requirements.

What kinds of free AI offers are listed?

Free tiers and free trials from AI providers, free API credits, startup and student programs, and free tools for coding, image generation, voice, and video.

How can I suggest a tool or report a broken link?

Use the submit form: paste the offer page URL and a short note. A person checks every submission before anything is listed. Broken links and changed terms go through the same form.
