MongoDB Atlas has a free-forever M0 cluster: 512 MB of storage on shared hardware, on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud. Atlas Vector Search runs on it too, so you can keep documents and their embeddings in one database for a small RAG app.
Free Tier Quotas & Limits
- One free M0 cluster per Atlas project
- 512 MB storage, counting documents and their indexes
- Up to 3 indexes of type search or vector
- 100 operations per second and 500 connections
- 10 GB in and 10 GB out per rolling 7-day period
- 100 databases and 500 collections
- No backups
- Paused after 30 days with zero connections (you can resume it)
How to Get Started
- Sign up at mongodb.com/cloud/atlas/register; no payment details on the form.
- Deploy a Free cluster and pick a cloud and region.
- Store embeddings in a field and create a vector search index on it, then query with
$vectorSearch.
For embeddings, Voyage AI by MongoDB gives 200M free tokens. Startups can apply to MongoDB for Startups for Atlas credits.
