Overview

Mixedbread is a Berlin-based retrieval and search platform known for the open-source mxbai-embed and mxbai-rerank model families. Its hosted Starter tier is free: every new workspace receives $5 in one-time credits, with no card required.

Free Tier Quotas & Limits

• $5 one-time credits per workspace, no credit card requested.
• 100 requests/minute rate limit (the pricing table lists 100 req/min separately for ingestion and for queries).
• Up to 10 Stores (managed vector indexes).
• 3 workspace users.
• Community Slack support.

Credits are spent at the same usage rates on every plan: Index - Fast at $1.50 per 1M content tokens, Index - High Quality at $3 per 1M, semantic search at $4 per 1K queries plus $3.50 per 1K reranked, and storage at $0.50 per 1M content tokens per month. Egress is included.

How to Get Started

1. Create an account at mixedbread.com - sign-in is by email or Google/GitHub OAuth.
2. The $5 credit is applied to your workspace automatically.
3. Create an API key under Settings -> API Keys.
4. Create a Store (chunking, indexing, hybrid search, rerank) or call the inference endpoints through the Python or Node SDK.

Because no card is on file, the API simply stops serving when the credit is exhausted rather than auto-billing. A separate startup program offers qualified, venture-backed companies $250 in one-time credits.
