Free AI for Nonprofits in 2026: Google, Microsoft, Canva, OpenAI and Claude
Which nonprofit AI programs are free (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Azure, Canva) and which are discounts (ChatGPT, Claude), plus how Goodstack verifies.
- Time
- 30 minutes to apply, then 2 to 14 business days of verification
- You need
- Registered charitable nonprofit status in your country (for example 501(c)(3) in the U.S.) · Your registration number or tax ID and governing documents · An employee or volunteer of the organization to apply (not an outside IT provider)
- Last checked
Five big AI vendors run nonprofit programs, but only three of them give AI away. Google and Microsoft include an AI assistant in the office suite they donate to verified nonprofits, Microsoft adds $2,000 a year of Azure credit you can spend on AI services, and Canva gives registered charities Canva Pro with its AI design tools. OpenAI and Anthropic offer discounts, not free plans: ChatGPT Business and Claude Team at about $8 per user per month for verified nonprofits.
None of these programs is in our offer catalog yet, so the table links each vendor's own page. Every row was read on that page on 2026-10-26, and each section below names its source and the date we checked it. The everyday free tiers at the end link to our verified offer pages and work for anyone, verified or not.

Getting verified: Goodstack, TechSoup and Microsoft
Every program checks that you are a real charity before it switches anything on, and most of them do not do it themselves.
- Goodstack verifies for Google, Canva, OpenAI and Anthropic. When you request a Google for Nonprofits account, Google sends your organization's legal name, registration number and official address to Goodstack, which may email you for documents. Google says most requests are reviewed in 2 to 14 business days. Anthropic says a Claude Team check through Goodstack takes 2 to 3 minutes.
- Approval by one vendor is not approval by all. Each vendor sends you to Goodstack through its own form, and each keeps the final say: Canva says meeting its criteria does not guarantee eligibility, and Microsoft reserves the right to grant or deny any application.
- TechSoup no longer verifies for Google. TechSoup stopped new Google for Nonprofits validations in August 2023 and sends those questions to Google and Goodstack. It still distributes some Microsoft donations: Microsoft lists grants of up to 50 Windows 11 Pro licenses through TechSoup.
- Microsoft runs its own check. You register your organization with Microsoft for Nonprofits; the person registering must be an employee or a "strategic volunteer", and an outside IT provider may not apply on your behalf. Microsoft also asks grantees to repeat an attestation to its donor rules to stay eligible.
Have these ready before you start: your registration number or tax ID, the legal name and address exactly as registered, governing documents that show your charitable purpose (Canva asks for them), and an email address at your organization's domain if you have one.

Who is left out
The programs disagree on the edges, so check yours before you apply.
- Schools and universities are excluded by Google, Microsoft and Canva, which send them to their education programs instead; see free AI for teachers. Anthropic is the exception: its nonprofit pricing covers K-12 public and private schools, though not higher education.
- Government bodies are excluded by Google, Microsoft, Canva and Anthropic. Canva and Anthropic also exclude political organizations and campaigns, and Microsoft excludes nonprofits whose work focuses on influencing public policy.
- Hospitals and health systems are excluded by Google, Microsoft and Anthropic, and public hospitals by Canva. Microsoft and Anthropic make exceptions for specific U.S. rural facilities such as independent Critical Access Hospitals and Federally Qualified Health Centers.
- Microsoft also excludes financial institutions, trade associations and professional sports bodies, plus religious organizations in India and housing associations in the U.K. Public libraries and public museums are eligible.
- Canva excludes U.S. 501(c) groups other than 501(c)(3), private and grantmaking foundations, membership organizations, social enterprises and B-Corps, and workforce or job-training programs.
- Countries. Google for Nonprofits lists the countries where it runs (Vietnam, Indonesia, Brazil, India, Kenya and the U.S. among them); Canva and Goodstack keep a country list of accepted registration types.

Google Workspace for Nonprofits
Google Workspace for Nonprofits costs $0 per user. It includes Gmail at your own domain, Calendar, Meet (150 participants), Drive with 100 TB shared across the organization, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms and Sites, admin controls, AppSheet Core for no-code apps, and the Gemini app with enterprise-grade data protections. New accounts can add up to 300 users; Google raises that to 2,000 on request.
Steps:
- Check that Workspace for Nonprofits is offered in your country on Google's eligibility page.
- Request a Google for Nonprofits account and wait for the Goodstack email; answer it quickly if it asks for documents.
- Once verified, activate Workspace for Nonprofits separately (each Google for Nonprofits product is activated on its own).
The catch: recording meetings and 2 TB of storage per user start at the discounted Business Standard ($3.50 per user per month on a 1-year commitment), and Vault at Business Plus ($6.16).

Microsoft 365, Copilot Chat and the Azure grant
Microsoft's grant covers Microsoft 365 Business Basic free for up to 300 users: web and mobile Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, 1 TB of cloud storage per user and Microsoft Copilot Chat, which Microsoft says is included in a Microsoft 365 subscription at no extra charge. The full Microsoft 365 Copilot, which works inside your files and apps, is a paid add-on at a nonprofit price of $25.50 per user per month, paid yearly.
The Azure grant gives eligible nonprofits $2,000 of Azure credit every year; Microsoft names AI-powered solutions, websites, virtual machines and databases among its uses. That is enough to run a small chatbot or document-search tool on Azure's AI services, if someone on your team or a partner can build it. Power Apps is free for up to 10 users and Power BI Desktop is free for everyone.
Steps: register on Microsoft for Nonprofits, wait for validation, then activate Business Basic and the Azure grant from Microsoft's Nonprofit Hub.

Canva Nonprofits
Canva gives registered charities, NGOs and social impact organizations all Canva Pro features free for up to 50 users: brand kits, more than 100 million premium photos, videos and graphics, and the AI tools in Canva's Visual Suite. For more seats, Canva Enterprise is 50% off. Apply from the Canva Nonprofits page with proof of registration and your governing documents; Goodstack checks them and Canva reviews every request.

OpenAI and Anthropic: discounts, not free plans
OpenAI for Nonprofits prices ChatGPT Business Standard seats at $8 per user per month billed yearly or $10 billed monthly. Premium seats get no discount, the API gets no discount, and larger organizations can ask sales for up to 75% off ChatGPT Enterprise. You apply with a short form, Goodstack verifies you, and the discount appears at checkout. OpenAI's 2024 launch post, updated on 2026-02-06, says up to 75% off Business or Enterprise; the help center's $8 and $10 prices are what applies at checkout today. OpenAI says it does not train on Business or Enterprise data.
Claude for Nonprofits prices the Claude Team plan at $8 per user per month, or $3 for nonprofits based in low- or middle-income countries, with a minimum of 2 seats. Organizations under 20 people verify through Goodstack; larger ones go through sales for Team or Enterprise. Team includes Claude and Claude Code, file creation, and connectors to Blackbaud, Benevity and Candid. The discount lasts as long as you keep your nonprofit status, and Anthropic does not train on Team or Enterprise data by default. Anthropic's AI Fluency for nonprofits course is free.
Neither is free, so compare it with the free assistant you already get: Copilot Chat in Microsoft's grant or Gemini in Google's.

Everyday free tiers while you wait
Verification takes days and some organizations will not qualify. These free tiers need no proof of status:
| Offer | Good for | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Free | Drafting appeals, newsletters, grant narratives and volunteer emails | Limited uploads and tools; chats train models unless you turn off "Improve the model for everyone" |
| Mistral free plan | A second assistant to compare drafts | Limited messages; Mistral may use your data for training unless you opt out |
| Gemini Developer API free tier | A volunteer developer building a small tool for your team | Free-tier prompts may be used by Google; see how to get a free Gemini API key |
Keep beneficiary names, case notes and donor records out of free consumer tiers that train on chats: does it learn from my chats?. The donated Google and Microsoft accounts, or a paid Business or Team plan, are the place for that data, and only if your own data policy allows it.

Limits and the catch
- Free means the base edition. Microsoft's grant includes Copilot Chat, while Copilot inside your files and apps is a paid add-on; Google lists the Gemini app, not Gemini inside each app, for its free edition.
- Check everything an AI drafts. Assistants invent plausible numbers and sources, which is costly in a grant report: why it invents sources.
- Programs change. OpenAI's nonprofit pricing has changed since its 2024 launch. We re-check vendor pages monthly; the date at the top of this page is our latest check.
