Free AI Image Generation: In the Browser and by API

Make AI images free with Bing Image Creator's 15 fast daily creations, or test image models by API with Replicate's free runs. Steps, limits and rules.

You need
Personal Microsoft account for Bing Image Creator (work or school Entra ID accounts are not supported) · Replicate account for free API test runs · fal account (optional) for the free daily video generations

There are two free routes to AI images. If you just want pictures, Bing Image Creator runs in the browser with a free Microsoft account and gives you a daily allowance of fast creations plus slower standard ones. If you want to call an image model from code, Replicate lets a new account run a set of image models, including Imagen 4 and FLUX, for a limited number of free runs before you add billing. fal is useful too, but its free daily allowance is for video, not images.

What you get

Bing Image Creator (Bing Image Creator)

  • 15 free fast creations per day. When they run out, they replenish the next day.
  • After that, standard speed is free but slower, up to 200 prompts per 24-hour period. Each Edit image click counts toward the 200.
  • Two Microsoft models: MAI-Image-2.5-Flash and MAI-Image-2e. One click on Create can return several images and counts as one creation.
  • Image upload and editing, which always uses MAI-Image-2.5-Flash.
  • Optional Microsoft Rewards boosts for more fast creations after the free 15 (details below).

Replicate free runs (Replicate Try for Free)

  • A limited number of free runs on the models in Replicate's Try for Free collection, with no credit purchase needed. Replicate does not publish how many runs you get.
  • Image models in the collection: google/imagen-4, black-forest-labs/flux-1.1-pro, black-forest-labs/flux-dev, black-forest-labs/flux-kontext-pro and ideogram-ai/ideogram-v3-turbo, plus topazlabs/image-upscale and two face-restoration models (sczhou/codeformer, tencentarc/gfpgan).
  • The collection also includes three video models: minimax/video-01, luma/reframe-video and topazlabs/video-upscale.

fal (fal MiniMax H3 Max free daily generations)

  • Five free MiniMax H3 Max video generations a day in the fal sandbox, up to 15 seconds each with synchronized audio, on a rolling 24-hour window. This is video only; fal's text-to-image models are pay-per-use.
  • fal's browser tools for images (background remover, image upscaler, image extender, resizer) are free with no account, but they edit images rather than generate them from a prompt.

Not an option: the Gemini API free tier. Google's image models have no free tier; see the free Gemini API key guide.

More free image APIs: the free image generation API guide compares Stability AI's free credits, OVHcloud's free SDXL endpoint, Pollinations and YepAPI alongside Replicate.

Steps

Bing Image Creator (no code)

  1. Go to bing.com/create. You can also open the Image Creator mini app in the Bing mobile app.
  2. Click Sign in to Create and sign in with a personal Microsoft account, or create one. Accounts signed in with Microsoft Entra ID (typically work or school accounts) can't use it.
  3. Pick a model: MAI-Image-2.5-Flash or MAI-Image-2e. If you upload an image to edit, MAI-Image-2.5-Flash is used.
  4. Write a detailed prompt (subject, action, setting, lighting, style such as "photorealistic" or "digital art") and click Create.
  5. Download the images you want to keep. Creations are stored for up to 90 days.
  6. Optional: in Image Creator settings, turn on a visible watermark to mark your images as AI-generated.

Replicate (API)

  1. Create an account at replicate.com.
  2. Open the Try for Free collection at replicate.com/collections/try-for-free and run a model such as google/imagen-4 on its web page to confirm the output suits you.
  3. Generate an API token at replicate.com/account/api-tokens and save it as an environment variable: export REPLICATE_API_TOKEN=r8_....
  4. Install the Python client (pip install replicate) and call replicate.run() with a model name from the collection, for example black-forest-labs/flux-dev, and an input such as {"prompt": "..."}.
  5. When Replicate asks you to set up billing, the free runs are used up.

fal (video, sandbox only)

  1. Sign in or create an account at fal.ai.
  2. Open fal.ai/minimax-h3-max and click 5 free videos to open the sandbox with the free model selected.
  3. Write the shot and the sound in one prompt, or attach an image to run image to video.
  4. To call fal from code, create a key at fal.ai/dashboard/keys; API requests are billed per use.

Limits and the catch

  • Bing usage rights. Microsoft's terms say it does not claim ownership of your prompts or creations, but using the service grants Microsoft, its affiliates and partners a license to use, copy, distribute, publicly display and edit them. The terms do not separately address commercial use, describe the service as "for entertainment purposes", give no warranty that output doesn't infringe third-party rights, and make you indemnify Microsoft for how you use it.
  • Bing creations are not unique. Other users may get the same or similar images from similar prompts, and Bing may show a recently cached image for a prompt similar to one used before.
  • Bing content rules. The Code of Conduct bans adult content, violence or gore, and removing or altering content credentials and other provenance signals. Prompts that break the rules may be blocked, and repeated violations can lead to suspension.
  • Rewards boosts cost points. If you turn on Microsoft Rewards in Image Creator settings, points are deducted for each fast creation after your free 15 until you switch back to standard speed or run out of points. Bing shows the points cost first.
  • Replicate's cap is unpublished. Replicate doesn't say how many free runs you get or whether API calls and web runs share the same count. After the limit you must add a card and buy prepaid credit.
  • Replicate licenses vary by model. Commercial use of outputs depends on each model's license; check the model page. For FLUX.1 models, Replicate says images generated on Replicate can be used commercially.
  • fal's free tier is not an API tier. The five daily generations run in the sandbox. Past that, or from your own app, MiniMax H3 Max is billed per second of video ($0.08 per second at 768p; H3 Max Turbo costs half). fal says content generated through its API can be used in commercial projects, subject to its terms of service.

If it doesn't work

  • Bing won't let you create: make sure you are using a personal Microsoft account, not a work or school account.
  • Bing is slow: your 15 fast creations are used up and you are on standard speed. Wait for the next day, or use Rewards points.
  • Bing blocked your prompt: it may conflict with the Content Policy. Rephrase it; repeated attempts at prohibited content can get the account restricted.
  • Bing stops accepting prompts: you may have hit 200 standard prompts in 24 hours. They replenish the next day.
  • Replicate asks for billing: your free runs are spent. Add a card and buy credit, or stop there.
  • fal shows a price instead of "Free": check you are signed in and have generations left in the current 24-hour window. The sandbox marks models with remaining free credits with a gift icon.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bing Image Creator really free?
Yes, with a personal Microsoft account. You get 15 fast creations per day, then free standard-speed creation up to 200 prompts per 24 hours.
Can I use Bing Image Creator images commercially?
Microsoft's terms don't address commercial use directly. Microsoft doesn't claim ownership of your creations, but it gets a license to use them, gives no warranty against infringement, and describes the service as for entertainment purposes.
Is there a free AI image generation API?
Replicate lets a new account run models such as Imagen 4 and FLUX for a limited number of free runs; the exact number isn't published. After that you need billing and prepaid credit.
Does the free Gemini API include image generation?
No. Google's image models have no free tier in the Gemini Developer API; free usage covers text, embedding, Live and TTS models.
