Free Image Generation APIs in 2026

Five verified ways to call an image model for free - Stability AI, Replicate, OVHcloud SDXL, Pollinations, YepAPI - with credits, rate limits and licenses.

Time
15 minutes
You need
An account and API key with the provider; none of the five asks for a card for the free part (OVHcloud's separate Public Cloud trial credit does) · For OVHcloud with a key: a Public Cloud project (anonymous calls work without one, at 2 requests a minute) · curl or any HTTP client; Replicate, Pollinations and YepAPI also work with their SDKs or the OpenAI SDK

If you want to generate images from your own code without paying, the free options are small: a one-time credit you spend down, a few free test runs, or one open model served at no cost. Five verified offers in the catalog cover it. Every number below was checked on the vendor's own pricing or docs page on 2026-10-20. Just want pictures in a browser? See the free AI image generator guide (Bing Image Creator and more).

Which one to pick

  • No credit to burn through: OVHcloud serves SDXL for free. Without a key you get 2 requests a minute per IP, enough for a prototype; with a Public Cloud project key the limit is 400 a minute.
  • Best quality for a test: Replicate's free runs include Imagen 4 and FLUX 1.1 Pro, and Stability's 25 credits cover a few Stable Image Ultra images.
  • The most images for nothing: Pollinations prices FLUX.1 schnell at 0.002 Pollen an image, so the quest rewards (0.25 Pollen each for creating a key and for using an image model) go a long way.
  • One key for many vendors: YepAPI's $5 covers FLUX.2, GPT Image and Seedream through one OpenAI-compatible key.
  • Not an option: the Gemini API free tier. Google's image models are not in the free tier; see the free Gemini API key guide.

Steps

Stability AI

  1. Create an account at platform.stability.ai; the 25 free credits are added to the new account.
  2. Create a key on the API keys page and save it as STABILITY_API_KEY.
  3. Call Stable Image Core: curl https://api.stability.ai/v2beta/stable-image/generate/core -H "Authorization: Bearer $STABILITY_API_KEY" -H "Accept: image/*" -F prompt="A lighthouse on a cliff at sunrise" -o lighthouse.png
  4. Watch the balance on your account page; when it is gone, buy credits to continue.

Replicate

  1. Create an account and open replicate.com/collections/try-for-free.
  2. Run a model such as google/imagen-4 on its page, then create an API token and call it from code (replicate.run() in the Python client).
  3. When Replicate asks you to add billing, the free runs are used up.

OVHcloud (SDXL)

  1. Open the AI Endpoints catalog and pick stable-diffusion-xl-base-v10; try it in the playground first.
  2. To call it without a key, use the endpoint from the model page; you are limited to 2 requests a minute.
  3. For the higher limit, create a Public Cloud project and an AI Endpoints key; the key is tied to that project.

Pollinations

  1. Sign in at enter.pollinations.ai and create a secret sk_ key (keep it on the server).
  2. Generate an image: curl "https://gen.pollinations.ai/image/a%20red%20fox?model=flux" -H "Authorization: Bearer $POLLINATIONS_KEY" -o fox.jpg. The OpenAI Images API also works with base URL https://gen.pollinations.ai/v1.
  3. Claim quest rewards in the dashboard to top up your free Pollen balance.

YepAPI

  1. Sign up at yepapi.com; the $5 credit is added with no card.
  2. Create an API key and call an image model through the OpenAI-compatible endpoint; check the model's per-image price first.

When to self-host

When rate limits or credits are too tight, run an open image model yourself: ComfyUI (GPL-3.0) runs Stable Diffusion, SDXL and FLUX models locally and has an HTTP API. You need your own GPU; the free GPU guide covers Kaggle, Colab and Hugging Face ZeroGPU.

Limits and the catch

  • One-time money. Stability's 25 credits and YepAPI's $5 do not refill; after that it is pay-as-you-go.
  • Replicate's cap is unpublished. It does not say how many free runs you get.
  • OVHcloud's free model is SDXL, a 2023 model. Newer image models there are paid; the free trial credit for a Public Cloud project needs a payment method.
  • Pollinations requires a key for every generation. There is no anonymous tier; free use runs on Quest Pollen, and every image model has a Pollen price. Models marked paid_only in the model list (Seedream, FLUX.2 Pro and Ideogram, for example) need paid Pollen; FLUX.1 schnell, Z-Image Turbo and GPT Image 2 can still be paid with Quest Pollen.
  • Licenses vary. Check the model license before shipping: Stability allows commercial use of outputs, Replicate depends on the model, SDXL uses OpenRAIL++.
  • Free tiers change. Offers are re-checked monthly; the verified date on each offer page is the day we last confirmed it. The free AI image tools hub lists every image offer we track.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free image generation API?
Yes, in small amounts: Stability AI gives new accounts 25 credits (about 8 Stable Image Core images), Replicate has free runs on Imagen 4 and FLUX models, OVHcloud serves SDXL for free at a limited rate, and Pollinations and YepAPI give small free balances.
Which free image API has no credit limit?
OVHcloud AI Endpoints lists Stable Diffusion XL base 1.0 as free. It is rate-limited instead: 2 requests a minute per IP without a key, 400 a minute per Public Cloud project with one.
How many images do Stability AI’s 25 free credits make?
At Stability’s published prices (1 credit = $0.01): about 8 Stable Image Core images at 3 credits, 10 SD 3.5 Flash images at 2.5, or 3 Stable Image Ultra images at 8 credits each.
Can I use images from a free API commercially?
Stability AI says yes, as long as the output does not violate copyright. On Replicate it depends on each model’s license, and OVHcloud’s free SDXL is under the OpenRAIL++ license.
Does the Gemini API free tier generate images?
No. Google’s image models are not part of the Gemini Developer API free tier.
