Free AI Music Generators in 2026: Suno, Udio, Stable Audio, ACE-Step and What You May Do With the Songs
Free AI music generators checked 2026-10-28: Suno, Udio, Stable Audio Open, ACE-Step. Daily limits and commercial-use terms.
- Time
- 15 minutes: make a first song on a free plan, or install an open model
- You need
- An account at the service (a Google, Discord or email sign-up); none of the hosted plans below needs a card · For ACE-Step or Stable Audio Open: your own machine, ideally with a GPU (ACE-Step 1.5 lists under 4GB of VRAM for the base model) · Before you publish a song: read the plan terms, because most free plans allow personal use only

Free AI music comes in two shapes: a hosted app with a daily or monthly allowance (Suno, Udio, ElevenLabs, Neume) and an open model you run on your own computer (ACE-Step, Stable Audio Open). The allowance is the easy part. The question that decides whether the song is useful is what you may do with it: on most free plans the answer is "listen and share, but not sell or monetize". Everything below was checked on each vendor's page on 2026-10-28, except Udio's pricing page, read on 2026-10-27.

| ElevenLabs Music | Part of the 10,000 free credits a month shared with speech | Monthly | No | No: free users "may only use the Services for non-commercial purposes" | 2026-10-28 |
| Neume | One free song, once, with 2 versions to choose from | Does not reset | No | Yes per its terms (read by a crawl, low confidence): "You own your Original Content and may use it for personal or commercial purposes" | 2026-10-28 |
| Stable Audio Open 1.0 | Open weights, up to 47 seconds of stereo audio at 44.1 kHz | n/a | No | Yes below USD 1,000,000 annual revenue under the Stability AI Community License | 2026-10-28 |

Hosted apps: easy, but check the song terms
- Suno gives 50 credits every day on the free plan and the v6-mini model. The pricing page lists "No commercial rights" and "No monthly song downloads" for free users, and the terms say free or basic tier outputs are for "personal and non-commercial purposes". Good for ideas and sharing a link, not for a monetized video. See the Suno free plan.
- Udio gives 10 credits a day and a monthly pool of 100 credits, with no card. A pair of 32-second songs costs 2 credits, and the free plan allows 3 full-length songs a day. Since the Universal Music Group partnership, the help center says downloading of audio, video and stems has been disabled, so songs stay on Udio. We could not open Udio's terms of service to confirm commercial rights, so treat them as unknown.
- ElevenLabs includes music in the same 10,000 monthly credits as speech and sound effects. Its terms are explicit: free users may only use the Services for non-commercial purposes, and a paid plan is needed for commercial use. See the ElevenLabs free plan.
- Neume is a one-time trial: one song, two versions, no card. Its terms say you own your content and may use it commercially, but we read that sentence automatically, not with the app open, so confirm it in the terms before you rely on it. See Neume.
Open models: your hardware, your terms
ACE-Step 1.5 is an MIT-licensed music model that generates from 10 seconds up to 10 minutes of audio, with cover, repaint and LoRA training. The README says the base model runs locally with less than 4GB of VRAM, while the 4B XL models need at least 12GB (20GB recommended). Its Hugging Face card says it was trained on licensed, public-domain and synthetic data and that generated music can be used commercially. That is the model card's claim; there is no separate legal opinion behind it.
Stable Audio Open 1.0 (1B parameters) makes up to 47 seconds of stereo sound at 44.1 kHz, better for samples and loops than full songs. It is under the Stability AI Community License: commercial use is allowed until you and your affiliates exceed USD 1,000,000 in annual revenue, after which you need a license from Stability. Stability also lists Stable Audio 3.0 Small and Medium weights for download on its Stable Audio page; we did not test their license. Stability's API credits are a separate one-time grant of 25 credits.
Meta's MusicGen is MIT code but its weights are CC-BY-NC 4.0, so non-commercial only; skip it for anything you sell.
Which one to pick
- Just trying it, songs with vocals: Suno or Udio, for personal listening only.
- Music for a monetized video or product: an open model (ACE-Step, or Stable Audio Open for short clips), or a paid plan whose terms grant commercial rights.
- Sound effects and short loops: Stable Audio Open or ElevenLabs.
- Private lyrics or a client brief: run a local model, so the text never leaves your machine.
More free voice and audio tools are in the free AI voice and audio tools hub.
Steps
- Decide the use: personal listening, or publishing and selling. That decides everything else.
- For a hosted try, sign up at suno.com or udio.com and generate one song from a two-line prompt.
- For commercial use, install ACE-Step 1.5 from its GitHub README and generate a song locally.
- Before you publish, copy the commercial-use sentence of the plan or license into your notes with its date.
- Check the credit counter before a longer session; credits do not carry over.
Limits and the catch
- Terms change. Suno, Udio and ElevenLabs have edited their plans several times; re-read the terms on the day you publish.
- Free plans may block downloads. Suno's free plan has no monthly song downloads and Udio has disabled downloads, so the file may be streaming only.
- Copyright is unsettled. Owning the output under a vendor's terms does not decide whether a song can be registered or whether it resembles an existing one.
- Open models are slower and rougher than the hosted apps, and need a GPU to be comfortable.
