Free AI for Data Analysis in 2026: ChatGPT, Claude, Google Colab and Kaggle

Analyze a CSV or spreadsheet with free AI in 2026: what ChatGPT Free, Claude Free, Colab with Gemini and Kaggle notebooks allow, with limits from vendor pages.

Time
10 minutes: upload a CSV and ask a question
You need
A CSV, TSV or Excel file (keep personal data out of it unless you are sure how the service uses it) · A free account: ChatGPT, Claude, Google (Colab) or Kaggle with a verified phone number for accelerators
Last checked

You can analyze a spreadsheet with AI for free: upload a CSV, ask a question in plain English, and the assistant writes and runs Python to produce the numbers and charts. Four free options do this today. ChatGPT Free and Claude Free are chat assistants that run code for you, Google Colab puts Gemini and a Data Science Agent inside a Jupyter notebook, and Kaggle gives you hosted notebooks with a weekly accelerator quota. None of them publishes a message limit for data work, so the table says "not published" rather than guess.

Read on 2026-11-01. Two vendors blocked our automated reading that day: OpenAI's help pages and julius.ai returned an error, and Kaggle showed a bot check. So the ChatGPT and Kaggle rows use the numbers in our verified catalog entries (verified 2026-10-31) and Julius, a popular data-analysis chatbot, is left out because we could not confirm its free plan. Check its pricing page yourself before relying on it.

ChatGPT Free: the quickest start #

Upload a CSV or Excel file, ask "which month had the highest sales and why", and ChatGPT writes the code, runs it and shows a table or chart. On the Free plan only everyday text chats are unlimited. File uploads and data analysis each have a separate limit, and ChatGPT tells you when you hit one and when it resets; the number is not published. The free model's context is small (about 12 pages of text at once), so very wide or long files are better handled by code than by pasting rows. See ChatGPT Free for the full list.

Claude Free: files up to 30 MB, charts as images #

Anthropic's help center says code execution and file creation are "enabled by default" on Free, Pro, Max and Ultra plans, with network access on so Claude can install packages from approved sources. It adds "You can also upload CSV, TSV, and other files for data analysis and visualization" and "Claude can create data visualizations in image files like PNG". The maximum file size is "30MB per file for both uploads and downloads".

There is no separate number for Free: "Use of this capability draws from the same usage limits offered by your plan", and "creating files will use more of your limit compared to normal chats with Claude". Plan on a handful of analyses a day, not dozens. Anthropic's article does not mention uploading Excel files to analyze, so convert a spreadsheet to CSV first.

Google Colab with Gemini: the most powerful free option #

Colab is a hosted Jupyter notebook service that is "free of charge to use". Its "AI-First" version adds a Gemini chat panel, AI autocompletion and a Data Science Agent: you give a high-level goal, the agent "will generate a plan, execute the necessary code, and present its findings", and you review the plan before it runs. You can upload CSV, JSON or Excel files or point to data already in your runtime and ask for analysis and visualizations. The AI features need a Google account aged 18 or over in a supported locale. Colab's FAQ does not publish usage limits for the AI.

The notebook is also yours: it is plain Python, so you can re-run it, share it and learn from the code. The catch is the runtime. Free notebooks get a standard-memory VM, run for at most 12 hours "depending on availability and your usage patterns", and idle ones are deleted. Google says it does not publish its limits because they vary over time, and that access to GPUs is "heavily restricted". A data-analysis job does not need a GPU, so keep the accelerator on None. For GPU work see free GPUs for AI and the free Colab alternatives. Colab is not in our catalog yet, so its row links Google's page.

Kaggle notebooks: free compute and public datasets #

Kaggle gives every account browser-based Jupyter notebooks. With a verified phone number you can switch on accelerators: up to 30 hours a week of NVIDIA GPU (P100 or 2x T4) and 20 hours a week of TPU, resetting weekly and sometimes higher with demand. For ordinary pandas work you do not need an accelerator at all. Kaggle does not offer a chat assistant for this the way ChatGPT, Claude and Colab do, so you write the code yourself or paste it from one of the assistants above. Details and the catch are on the Kaggle offer page.

Which one to use #

  • A quick question about one spreadsheet: ChatGPT Free or Claude Free. Upload, ask, get a chart.
  • A repeatable analysis you want to keep and rerun: Google Colab with Gemini; the notebook is the deliverable.
  • Practice on real datasets, or heavy compute: Kaggle notebooks.
  • Large files: Claude stops at 30 MB per file; ChatGPT does not publish a size on its Free plan. Colab and Kaggle work with files in the runtime, so they cope better with big data.

Limits and the catch #

  • Check the numbers, not just the chart. Assistants write plausible code and sometimes get it wrong; open the code, compare a total against the raw file and read why models make things up.
  • Do not upload secrets or personal data. Free chats may train models unless you opt out: see why "free" chats may train on your data. Remove names, emails and IDs first.
  • The assistant runs code for you. That is what code execution means: useful, but it can fail silently, so confirm results ran.
  • Limits are unpublished and move. None of these vendors states a number for data analysis on the free plan; the date at the top of each section is our latest check.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT analyze a CSV file for free?
Yes. ChatGPT Free accepts file uploads and can run analysis and make charts, but uploads and data analysis have their own limits that OpenAI does not publish as a number. Only everyday text chats are unlimited on Free.
Does Claude Free do data analysis?
Yes. Anthropic says code execution and file creation are on by default for Free plans, and you can upload CSV, TSV and other files for analysis and charts. The maximum file size is 30 MB per file, and the work draws from the same usage limit as chat, with file creation using more of it.
What is the Data Science Agent in Google Colab?
An agent inside Colab that, given a goal such as analyzing a dataset, generates a plan, runs the code and presents findings. You review the plan before it executes. Colab says its AI features need a Google account aged 18 or over in a supported locale.
Is Google Colab really free?
Colab is free of charge to use, but it does not publish its limits. Free notebooks run at most 12 hours depending on availability, idle runtimes are deleted, and access to GPUs is heavily restricted. Data analysis does not need a GPU.
Why is Julius AI not in this guide?
julius.ai blocked our automated reading on 2026-11-01, so we could not confirm its free plan limits from its own pages and left it out rather than guess. Check its pricing page directly.
Which free option is best for a large dataset?
Colab or Kaggle, because the data stays in the notebook runtime and you run pandas on it. Claude Free caps each file at 30 MB, and ChatGPT Free does not publish a file size limit.
